Visual Link Spanish(TM) Testimonial –
=======================================

Hello David,

I’ve had your Spanish “Visual Link” course for a couple of weeks now.
I am very impressed to date. I’ve always known quite a few words in
Spanish, but never had the ability to, as they say “put it all
together”. Your course has really allowed me to do that. I find
myself thinking in Spanish quite a bit with a lot of things I’m
trying to say in English, day to day.

I’m really taking my time, as I’ve just finished the 5 sections
associated with “basic needs”. Your approach to grouping words in
“basic needs” is brilliant. I feel really confident and don’t require
the manual as the instruction is so good. “Maria” has an excellent
voice for learning !!

I took a chance buying your product, as there are so many Spanish
courses available. I believe I chose well and will recommend it to
others.

Gracias,

The Official “Ask Dave” Section —–
=====================================

Question

Hola Dave

When do we use ¿Cuál? y ¿Qué? in a question?

Can I use ¿Cuál día vas al teatro? or is it ¿Qué día vas al teatro?

Gracias

Ramona

Answer

Hola Ramona,

There is a set specific rule and way to do it, however people from
some regions - especially Mexicans tend to break the rules.

Basically, the official rule is:

Qué

If you are talking about a noun and the noun comes directly after
“what/which”, you should use “Qué.” Here are some examples:
“What/Which book?” would be “¿Qué libro?”, “What/Which car?” would be
“¿Qué carro?”, and “What/Which experience?” would be “¿Qué
experiencia?”

Cuál

You use “Cuál” when the noun doesn’t come right after. Here are some
examples: if you were to simply ask “Which?” it would be “¿Cuál”,
“Which is it?” would be “¿Cuál es?” and “Which (one) do you think…?”
would be “¿Cuál piensas?” In contrast, the phrase “¿Qué piensas?”
means “What do you think?”

Sometimes native speakers, especially those from Mexico tend to use
“Cuál” when they should used “Qué”. Here are some examples:
“What/Which book?” is said “¿Cuál libro?”, “What/Which car?” would be
“¿Cuál carro?”, and “What/Which experience?” would be “¿Cuál
experiencia”.

To answer your original question, since “día” is a noun, the phrase
“¿Qué día vas al teatro?” is tecnically correct, however, many
Mexicans and some people from other regions may say “¿Cuál día vas al
teatro?”

Dave

==============================
Culture —– Spain or Mexico
==============================

Many people have the mistaken idea that the Spanish language that is
used in Spain is completely different from that spoken in Mexico.
They also believe that if you speak in Mexican Spanish, they won’t be
able to understand you in Spain. I’m not sure where people get this
idea from but it is simply not true. As I mentioned in the newsletter
last week, some words may vary region to region (especially slang or
swear words) but the core Spanish language spoken in each country is
still the same.

In fact, there is a very close correlation between English from the
United States, England, and Australia and Spanish spoken in Spain,
Mexico and Latin America in general. For example, if someone from
England or Australia talks, I, as an American, can understand them
just fine and they can understand me. Sure we have different accents,
some of their swear words are different, and I may not understand
many of their slang words but we can understand each other. It is the
same with Spanish in Spain, Mexico and Latin America. They have
different accents and their regional uses of some words may vary but
they can understand each other just fine.

Briefly, some differences in accent between Latin America and Spain
are that in Spain, when they say their “S’s”, they make more of a
hissing “s” sound. Also, in Spain, the “z” and “c” (followed by “e”
or “i”) make a “th” sound instead of the Latin American “s” sound.
And finally, in Latin America, the “ll” can sound like an English “j”
or “y” depending on the region, however in Spain, it is generally
pronounced like a “y”.

(Just a little side note: Mexico is considered part of Latin America;
I have distinguished them since around 70% of Spanish speakers in the
U.S. come from Mexico and the rest from Latin America in general.
Source: census.gov)

All of these accent and vocabulary differences were considered as we
created our Visual Link Spanish™ course. As part of our creation
process, we had it reviewed by individuals from South America, as
well as corporate executives, a lawyer, and a linguist from Mexico in
addition to one from Spain. Although our course favors Latin American
Spanish and is recorded by a Mexican woman’s voice, we have ensured
that almost every word in the course can be understood in whatever
country Spanish is spoken.

During the creation process, we took things a step further and were
very picky about using the most contemporary words and phrases in the
course. There are many phrases that are currently found in textbooks
that are no longer commonly used in Latin America. The reviewers
helped us use the most common phrases in use today for subjects like
telling time, greetings and many others.

Now you know the scoop on the difference between Spanish from Spain
and Latin America.

Sneak peek at next week: “Now or Right Now? (Important Cultural Time
Differences)”

¡Qué le vaya bien! (May everything go well for you!)

examples: if you were to simply ask “Which?” it would be “¿Cuál”,
“Which is it?” would be “¿Cuál es?” and “Which (one) do you think…?”
would be “¿Cuál piensas?” In contrast, the phrase “¿Qué piensas?”
means “What do you think?”

“¿Qué día vas al teatro?” is tecnically correct, however, many
Mexicans and some people from other regions may say “¿Cuál día vas al
teatro?”

==============================
Culture —– Spain or Mexico
==============================

(Just a little side note: Mexico is considered part of Latin America;

Hello Anna,

First, I would like to offer you an apology. Early this morning, I
became aware of an issue that took place over this week that kept a
lot of people from being able to successfully take advantage of the
great savings being offered on the Visual Link Spanish(TM) Course.

There was an unscheduled update with our shopping cart which resulted
in problems for many customers. This problem has been corrected and
you should no longer have a problem placing your order.

The special offer was to end soon, but due to the unforeseen problem,
I have extended the special offer to get the Visual Link Spanish(TM)
Course for $110 off until Tuesday!

To save $110 and get the Visual Link Spanish(TM) course for only
$89.99, go to:

http://www.learnspanishtoday.com/order/norisk.html

In case you no longer have the details of the sale, I have included
them below:

With today’s economy, the competitive nature of the world today and
so many products out there that don’t work, I felt a strong need this
week to warn you of THE RISKS OF NOT USING VISUAL LINK SPANISH(TM).

By ordering Visual Link Spanish(TM), you avoid all of the risks
below!

(list price $199.95, order (above) by August 26 and your cost is only
$89.99!)

1. THE RISK OF LOSING MONEY - You could waste between $40 and $350 on
other Spanish courses that don’t work. In today’s economy, every
dollar kept in your pocket counts! With Visual Link Spanish(TM), your
intellectual investment yields high satisfaction dividends.
2. THE RISK OF FRUSTRATION - You could spend a lot of time with other
Spanish courses and never actually get anywhere. This can lower your
self confidence in connection with learning languages and even make
you think you have a deficiency in learning in general.
3. THE RISK OF WASTING TIME - You will likely spend a lot of time
learning words with other courses but never gain the skill of putting
them into sentences. It that happens, you will never truly learn to
communicate with people in Spanish and gain the highest satisfaction
of language learning - that of gaining friendships with the warm and
friendly people who speak Spanish.
4. THE RISK OF CONFUSION - With other courses, you will spend a lot
of brain power learning words and rules that aren’t always clear and
that you may not remember. Visual Link Spanish(TM) teaches you to
build sentences in a fun, easy and simple way with high retention.
(see testimonials below)
5. THE RISK OF GIVING UP ON A GOAL - With other courses, it may take
years to reach your goal of becoming fluent (if you even reach it at
all). Many people give up on their goal after using courses that are
designed to sell well but don’t actually work. As you spend time with
the Visual Link(TM) system, you will become fluent in a few short
months and feel the satisfaction of accomplishing your goal!
6. THE RISK OF LOST EARNING POTENTIAL - You may miss out on a pay
raise or new position you’ve applied for by not being bilingual.
7. THE RISK OF LOST HEALTH BENEFITS - Many studies have reported how
learning a second language can stave off the affects of Alzheimer’s.
If you don’t act soon, you may even forget that you received this
email.
8. THE RISK OF LIMITED COMMUNICATION - by not learning Spanish with
the Visual Link(TM) system, your potential to communicate with
friends, family or coworkers will be limited.

To order, paste the following link into your browser:

SEE WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE TO SAY:

> TESTIMONIAL #1:

Hola!

I knew when I found your web site on the Internet that this program
was going to be just what I was looking for. I have just finished
up the first section of Basic Needs and I am looking forward to the
remainder of the lessons.

We have a large Hispanic population in our area now and I thought it
would be an interesting and fun challenge to learn their language.

I have also heard that learning a new language is good for the mind,
especially in our senior years. I never dreamed at my age I could
ever learn another language, but you have made that possible. I’m
really enjoying it and amazing myself!

The lessons are wonderful and so well put together. I like the
gradual introduction to the mechanics of the language as well as
listening to the Spanish being spoken so that I can actually hear how
it is to be pronounced. I also like the fact that I can go at my
own pace and at my own leisure.

Thanks for a great program and Happy New Year!

Hasta luego!

Elizabeth Johnson

> TESTIMONIAL #2:

Hola Dave,

We arrived in La Paz in December. I used the basics while driving
down from Bellingham, WA (including the 400 mile detour from Seattle
to Portland). I’m now working level 2. Love it. I reviewed your
program with my private tutor. She was very impressed with it.

When will level 3 be available? If it is not in the works, it should
be.

Warmest regards,

Luiza

> TESTIMONIAL #3:

Dear David Clark,
Thank you for your follow up assignment.

I must say that your program is the best I have encountered so far.
It is straightforward and very user friendly.

I have other programs, e.g. Rosetta Stone, but your program is by far
the best. In such a little time I have learned a whole lot of Spanish
with your program.

I work at a major city hospital in New York with over 90% native
Spanish speaking staff and patients; and your software is proving to
be very useful.

Please let me know if you have the same kind of program for French.

And keep up the good work.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Ernest Bhabor.

> TESTIMONIAL #4:

I like the mini-manual the most because it demonstrates sentence
construction and is the best aid for participating in actual
conversation.
– Catharine Wofford

> TESTIMONIAL #5:

The form that the course is in- with the subjects that you couple
with the verbs and objects- is just so appealing to my mind’s logic
that it sold me on your course above all the others I looked at
online.
– Jeff Glen

> TESTIMONIAL #6:

The manual was very simple and easy to understand. It was very user
friendly. I really liked the layout and how each section built on the
previous section. It was very methodical. The layout was very
logical.

We arrived in La Paz in December. I used the basics while driving

Hola Anna,

If you don’t act soon, you may even forget that you received this
email.
